About Mark Bishop

BACP Registered Counsellor in Birmingham, Lichfield and Online

I’m Mark Bishop BA (Hons), MBACP, a BACP registered counsellor offering counselling in Birmingham/Wednesbury, Lichfield and online across the UK.

I work in a relational, integrative and humanistic way, which means I place the counselling relationship at the heart of the work. My aim is to offer a confidential space where you can talk openly, reflect honestly and begin to make sense of what you are experiencing.

I believe counselling works best when it feels safe, respectful and collaborative. You will not be judged, rushed or told who you should be. We will work together at a pace that feels manageable for you.

My background

Before working as a counsellor, I spent 20 years in education, youth and community settings. This included working across statutory, private and charity organisations, and continues to shape the way I work, particularly my understanding of responsibility, pressure, relationships and the emotional demands of supporting others.

My background includes teaching, business management, community work, and working in charities, CICs and recovery services. As a qualified educator, I understand how rewarding people-focused work can be, but also how exhausting, pressured and complex it can become.

As well as working directly with students and communities, I founded and managed an education and training organisation delivering accredited learning programmes.

I also have experience supporting adults recovering from alcohol and drug addiction in specialist recovery services, including work as a counsellor in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and community support services.

I have specialist trauma-informed training and practise in trauma-informed ways. This means recognising that emotional distress often develops in response to difficult or overwhelming life experiences. While everyone’s story is different, many people discover that alcohol or drugs became a way of coping with emotional pain, trauma or other challenges.

Rather than viewing addiction through the lens of shame or blame, I aim to understand the purpose substance use has served and support clients in finding healthier ways of meeting those needs.

How I work

Counselling with me is not about being told what to do or being judged for where you are in life.

I work collaboratively, helping you explore what has happened, how it may be affecting you now, and what might help you develop more self-understanding, steadiness and choice.

My approach is integrative, which means I draw on different ways of working depending on your needs. At the heart of my work is a person-centred and relational approach, where trust, honesty and respect are central to the counselling process.

You may come to counselling because you feel anxious, low, burnt out, disconnected, ashamed, angry, stuck in old patterns, or unsure how to talk about what you are carrying. You do not need to have anything figured out before getting in touch.
